Happy Mommy’s Day

Happy Mother’s Day! MUCH love to all the dedicated, devoted, and hard-working women — and female critters — of the world.

Me + Mom (w/ brother in belly) in Central FL, 1972, PRE-Disney — while swamps were being filled

I’ll save *exactly* what the momma’s feeding the juvenile (below) for an upcoming post…. It’s just. That. Yummy!

Great Blue Heron feeding her young on a tree-top nest

Big Like You: Momma Alligator with one of her babies

Anhinga Mealtime: Busy mother Anhinga with her brood

Our neighborhood stray cat and her kitten in our yard; such a good momma (now: TNR time!)

  2. I love the picture of you and your mom! Your mom must have been sad to see the swamps go…

    • Ah thanks so much! I love this one, because she’s pregnant with my brother too. 🙂 She’s always had mixed feelings on FL; it was a different place pre-Disney. She was a liberal teacher in an…er…not-so-liberal area, to put it politely. But she *always* talked about how they filled up all the swamplands with sadness…

      • Yes, I’m sure Disney World was wonderful for the economy, but a disaster for the natural environment. I remember going there with my parents in 4th grade, when it was brand new. I was blown away by how much larger it was than the original one in L.A.

      • Exactly… It was an *entirely* different place in 1972, that’s for sure. Natural Florida has been erased — with the addition of all those other parks, even more so. I remember visiting Anaheim, too (we lived in Huntington Beach for a spell), and it’s NOTHING like Orlando.

    • Thanks so much! ♥ After I wrote it, I realized I should’ve added “to the 2- and 4-legged babies,” because so many (me included) fall into the category of momma of critters!!

    • Thanks so much! ♥ I should’ve added “to the 2- and 4-legged babies,” because so many (me included) fall into that latter category, hee. 🙂

  8. Wonderful pictures, especially you and your mom! I also LOVE the red-wing blackbird in the nest. It’s amazing how you get such close-up and beautiful photos!

    • Thanks so much!! I was thrilled to catch the new red-winged blackbird momma, after seeing all the empty nests… The telephoto lens is a huge help in our wetlands + swamps. I’d have a lot of vegetation shots, otherwise. I actually wish I had a stronger lens, heh!! 🙂

      • Haha, yes the many photos that are taken for that one that is awesome! I used to shoot film with an old Nikon with a telephoto lens. I miss it, too. You do an amazing job with the lens you have!

      • Ah, you’re so kind. I’m still learning, but it’s a joy — I’m able to get out into nature, decompress, AND practice! And, occasionally grumble if I don’t have the equipment to get the shot, hee…

  9. Beautiful images! I love them all! 😉
